Carla is reeling from the brutal murder of her nephew。 She trusts no one: good people are capable of terrible deeds。 But how far will she go to find peace?

Innocent or guilty, everyone is damaged。 Some are damaged enough to kill。

In short: A young man, Daniel, is found murdered in his houseboat。 3 women, Laura, Carla and Miriam are being questioned and all have motives。 My thoughts: I went back & forth with this book。 Some books I like for the story they tell, others I like for the writing。 This was the later。 I started this book on audio with an ALC from @libro。fm While I enjoyed the narrator there was so much going on and so many characters introduced that I found it hard to follow。 Luckily my physical copy from @river In short: A young man, Daniel, is found murdered in his houseboat。 3 women, Laura, Carla and Miriam are being questioned and all have motives。 My thoughts: I went back & forth with this book。 Some books I like for the story they tell, others I like for the writing。 This was the later。 I started this book on audio with an ALC from @libro。fm While I enjoyed the narrator there was so much going on and so many characters introduced that I found it hard to follow。 Luckily my physical copy from @riverheadbooks arrived and I was able to stop listening and finish the book reading。 The characters in this book are not likable。 Writing their stories and how they all see each other was done really well。 The pacing was slow but served this story perfect as it helped build the feeling of anger, jealousy and resentment all while slowly revealing the connections everyone had。 There was so much else that happened in this book with the character backstories, a book within the book and solving it the whodunnit。 In short, it was one slow burning, twisty domestic thriller with standout writing。 。。。more

Hawkins has a way of bring her characters to life, their flaws as well that you find yourself invested in them。 (Irene I love Irene I could relate to her younger self on so many levels she just spoke to me) A compelling murder mystery based on revenge, deceit, jealousy, pain and trauma。

The narrative was choppy and not very intriguing。 Some characters were better established than others。(view spoiler)[I would have rated this three stars, but I am sick of reading mysteries/domestic thrillers that use incest as a plot device。 A Slow Fire Burning does not actually have incest, but there is an inappropriate relationship between an aunt and nephew that has sexual undertones。 It's not creative or edgy, and was not necessary for the overall plot。 (hide spoiler)] The narrative was choppy and not very intriguing。 Some characters were better established than others。(view spoiler)[I would have rated this three stars, but I am sick of reading mysteries/domestic thrillers that use incest as a plot device。 A Slow Fire Burning does not actually have incest, but there is an inappropriate relationship between an aunt and nephew that has sexual undertones。 It's not creative or edgy, and was not necessary for the overall plot。 (hide spoiler)] 。。。more

Paula Hawkins' latest thriller shifts perspective back and forth among three women, Miriam, Laura, and Carla。 while the story is told in the third person。 There are interludes from a mystery that echoes Daniel's murder and Miriam's life。The tale unfolds slowly but surely revealing more of the women’s lives and most intriguingly, teasing out the truth of the mystery that intersects with the investigation into Daniel’s death。 Paula Hawkins ratchets up the tension as the story evolves。 Slowly, read Paula Hawkins' latest thriller shifts perspective back and forth among three women, Miriam, Laura, and Carla。 while the story is told in the third person。 There are interludes from a mystery that echoes Daniel's murder and Miriam's life。The tale unfolds slowly but surely revealing more of the women’s lives and most intriguingly, teasing out the truth of the mystery that intersects with the investigation into Daniel’s death。 Paula Hawkins ratchets up the tension as the story evolves。 Slowly, readers get glimpses of the truth。 As the story snowballs, as statements and small lies become truths, the murder comes to light。 You’ll have to read to the very end to find out who the killer is。 Then again, readers may never know。 All in all, a most satisfying thriller。Thanks to the BookLoft of German Village (Columbus, OH) http://www。bookloft。com for an ARC to read and review。 。。。more

Full disclaimer, I alternated between the audiobook and the physical book while reading A Slow Fire Burning。I really enjoyed Paula Hawkins' debut The Girl on the Train, but the alcoholc female protagonist troupe is sooooo 2018, so I am not sure that Paula Hawkins came grip readers on her books。 She doesn’t use this troupe this time, but I feel that is probably a main selling point to why her debut did so well。 I skipped Into The Water because I heard it wasn't a mystery。 I was really excited Full disclaimer, I alternated between the audiobook and the physical book while reading A Slow Fire Burning。I really enjoyed Paula Hawkins' debut The Girl on the Train, but the alcoholc female protagonist troupe is sooooo 2018, so I am not sure that Paula Hawkins came grip readers on her books。 She doesn’t use this troupe this time, but I feel that is probably a main selling point to why her debut did so well。 I skipped Into The Water because I heard it wasn't a mystery。 I was really excited to pick up A Slow Fire Burning because I heard that it is Paula Hawkins back at her mystery and suspense roots。 I'm here to tell you that I think this author will be a one-hit wonder for me。 I am toggling between 2 and 3 stars, but I bumped it to 3 as I didn't dislike the book, it was just a slow fire boring for me。 It took almost two weeks to get through this one and that is probably the longest a book has ever taken me since I created my Goodreads / Bookstagram accounts。The story focuses on Laura (who we hear her name literally in almost every paragraph -_-) and two other women, Miriam and Carla, respectively。 After a man is found dead, each of these women have motive to be the culprit。 Throughout the book, we get a very deep and twisty whodunnit, which is probably why I bumped it to 3 stars。 I did enjoy how Hawkins was able to humanize the characters in this story by diving deep into their psyche, but this will also provide somewhat of a lull period for readers as this book is very slow。 During this time, we see how the three main protagonists relate to each other in some way (no spoilers)。 I think the issue that I had with the pacing was that it started off fast paced and wild, and then the fuse dimmed until the end。 I've been reading a lot of books providing this storyline build up lately and it's really hit or miss so go into that preparing for a slowly drawn out story。 Overall, it sounds like I'm a big complainer, but I did think the book had some great moments。 It's definitely a darker type of story than I expected。 We get some explicit mentions of the crimes at hand which I always appreciate。 Overall this book is a character driven suspense novel and you need to go in with realistic expectations。 。。。more

I am convinced that the only amazing book Paula Hawkins wrote was The Girl on the Train…。。Which is sad because I can see the vision for this book but the execution was lacking? It’s a very slow build and more than 2 POV to follow。 The ending of course she lets everything and unravel and instead of being shocked or surprised by everything, the last 20% of the book is underwhelming。

4 incendiary stars for this new thriller from Paula Hawkins。 Early in the book, one of the women mentions how old books are slowly self-combusting, alluding to the deterioration that occurs inside paper。 That metaphor was such a striking snapshot of the book itself。 One young man dies on a houseboat。 Revolving in his story are neighbor Miriam, one-night-stand Laura, mother Angela, and aunt Carla。 Also pulled into the orbit are Carla's ex Theo and Angela's friend/neighbor Irene。 These are out mai 4 incendiary stars for this new thriller from Paula Hawkins。 Early in the book, one of the women mentions how old books are slowly self-combusting, alluding to the deterioration that occurs inside paper。 That metaphor was such a striking snapshot of the book itself。 One young man dies on a houseboat。 Revolving in his story are neighbor Miriam, one-night-stand Laura, mother Angela, and aunt Carla。 Also pulled into the orbit are Carla's ex Theo and Angela's friend/neighbor Irene。 These are out main characters and they connect to each other in ways both predictable and unpredictable。 As with The Girl on the Train, there are unreliable accounts of events right and left。 Pay attention! The police are quite bamboozled and have to finally rely on an unexpected player to catch the killer。 In the mix are abduction, plagiarism, a hit and run, a hidden graphic novel, pickpocketing, bullying, and so much guilt。 。 。 Cleverly put together and an engrossing read。Succombing already to slow fire, the acidification of the paper destroying it from within, eating away at the pages, making them brittle and breakable。 It was terribly sad when you thought about it, all those stories slowly disappearing。Thank you to Riverhead Books and Edelweiss+ for a DRC in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

In Paula Hawkins's latest thriller, we try to decipher who killed Daniel, a troubled young man who lives on a boat in London。 Around him there are a bunch of (very) troubled characters (trying to avoid spoilers here): a couple who lost their son (trigger warning: child death), Daniel's mother (who's an alcoholic), Miram (the nosy boat neighbor), the deeply hurt Laura, and the lovely lovely Irene (who forgets things)。Some of the characters were hateful, some I just wanted to hug and comfort。 I th In Paula Hawkins's latest thriller, we try to decipher who killed Daniel, a troubled young man who lives on a boat in London。 Around him there are a bunch of (very) troubled characters (trying to avoid spoilers here): a couple who lost their son (trigger warning: child death), Daniel's mother (who's an alcoholic), Miram (the nosy boat neighbor), the deeply hurt Laura, and the lovely lovely Irene (who forgets things)。Some of the characters were hateful, some I just wanted to hug and comfort。 I thought that their depth and pasts were well done。 What "bothered" me (for lack of a better word) is the attempt at a "book within a book" which made us live some of the most traumatising experiences for one of the characters twice。 I just read The Plot recently, and it was impossible not to compare how the "book within a book" plot was executed in both books。 I don't know that it was needed in this book, and I can't say I loved or enjoyed how it was done。This is a 3。5/5 for me。 It definitely kept me reading and wanting to know what happened, and I hurt with some of the characters, but I didn't love the execution。 。。。more

This is a slow burning novel, as the title suggests。 It has lots of unlikeable and unreliable characters, it jumps around a lot, it has at least one bona fide murder and maybe some that weren’t really accidents。 Despite all of this you just must keep reading because the writing is superb, the atmosphere is intoxicating, and it all comes together in a very satisfying manor。

There are quite a lot of characters in the story and it did take me some time to figure out who is who。 Not a big issue。 I was really invested in the story, trying to figure out if and how these three women are connected。 Each of their stories were so interesting which added a lot of suspense and mystery as to the identity of the real killer。 I liked that it has a book within a book element in the plot。 Ahh, perplexing! The audiobook is narrated by Rosamund Pike and it was FANTASTIC! Her narration and accent were perfect, adding so much personalities to the characters。 I could hear the anger, resentment, jealousies of the characters through her narration。 I highly recommend listening to the audiobook!Truth be told, I wasn't a fan of The Girl on the Train but I enjoyed this one so much more! Okay lots and lots of thoughts about this one! It’s called A Slow Fire Burning FOR A REASON… this is a slow burn but in a good way!! My first Paula Hawkins novel and well, it was ok。 A story of family grief, secrets, revenge, mis direction, unreliable narrators, it certainly is a slow burner and, if anything a little too long。 There is so much crammed in here story wise, yet the pacing itself is very slow。 The “story” within the story did little imo, only adding to the confusion。 Some interesting characters and the author did manage to keep a hell of a lot of plates spinning at the one time but despite all that I wasn’t overl My first Paula Hawkins novel and well, it was ok。 A story of family grief, secrets, revenge, mis direction, unreliable narrators, it certainly is a slow burner and, if anything a little too long。 There is so much crammed in here story wise, yet the pacing itself is very slow。 The “story” within the story did little imo, only adding to the confusion。 Some interesting characters and the author did manage to keep a hell of a lot of plates spinning at the one time but despite all that I wasn’t overly engaged with the story。 It feels like it’s trying too hard to be clever。 Not bad but not great。 Thanks to the publisher for the ARC through Netgalley。 。。。more

A Slow Fire Burning is an apt title for this book because it is a slowwww burrrrn。Idk。 I couldn’t keep the characters straight。 Which maybe was a personal issue but that’s kinda a problem when it comes to enjoying a book。 I was constantly like who now?! Who did what? Who even is Carla?! What is happening?? So, yeah。It had some really great writing descriptions at some points, but also felt a bit rambling。

Since Paula Hawkins also wrote The Girl on the Train? Lol There are various POVs, although the voices are distinct enough to make it easy to differentiate between the characters。 Each of them is unlikable in their own way, with major character flaws and hidden secrets。 In addition, there is no shortage of unreliable narrators。 It made it really hard to pin down who the villain was, when everyone looked a bit guilty of something。 I had my eye on someone for much of the story, but … I think we all know how that goes when reading a well-crafted mystery。 And let me tell you: this is a truly well-crafted story。Although there weren’t really any moments that made me actually gasp, the story was full of twists and turns that had me constantly second-guessing every assumption that I had made。 There is another story running through this one; a story that one of the characters has written, and I promise, it’s relevant to the plot。 It’s completely distinct from what is going on, and it amps up the tension running through the book。 Speaking of tension, there was so much going on that it constantly had me waiting to find out what happened next。 Hawkins successfully avoided the story feeling choppy, which is always a risk when using multiple POVs。 She skillfully manipulated the tension levels throughout the story, constantly casting suspicion from one character to another, making each one look as though they were hiding something (because everyone had something to hide in this story)。 I was always wondering what else they had to hide and just what they were capable of。 The story was done really well and held my interest from start to finish。 I couldn’t put it down, especially as I got closer to the end。 The narrator, Rosamund Pike, did a fantastic job of voicing a variety of characters and making them all clearly different。 This is definitely not a book to miss。 The ending will surprise you。 You can get a copy of this audiobook through Libro。fm here。 。。。more
